50 Amigurumi Summer Challenge

It is (almost) summer!! It is so close to the actual end of the school year, that my brain is already on summer vacation, at least on the weekends. Usually about this time I make a summer “to-do” list, just in case I get bored with my time off. I never actually do get bored, since I have staff development, summer camps, and conferences that I attend. I do have some free time, and I like to have goals and ideas to fill it. Also, lately, I have been re-inspired to crochet after taking a bit of time off from it. I have made 5 Amis in the last week, and I hope to keep that momentum going for a while. So, I am officially instituting the “50 Amigurumi Summer Challenge!” I am super excited about it! You can join in, or just follow along with me. I will try to post them with stories and captions here, and will also post on my facebook and my pinterest board, as well as on instagram, #50amichallenge.

I am really stoked about this, so even if you don’t join in, feel free to follow along and comment on what I make. If you join in, use #50amichallenge! So here are the rules:

1. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, make 50 amigurumi.

2. Post pics and use #50amichallenge on any of your social media! Link back to this post to get others involved.

3. If you use someone else’s pattern, credit them for their work.

4. Have fun and be creative!

I look forward to seeing what everyone makes!

With that said- Here are the first five of my amis for the #50amichallenge!

My school’s mascot is the Eagle! So, I made a couple of eagles to sell at the craft show in the fall. Here are number 1 and 2:

#1 Eagle

The second one came out a little taller. Since these are a school mascot, I will probably make a few more, but I won’t count any more towards the challenge.

#2 Eagle

Then I made a cutie, big-headed tiger.

#4 is a minion from the movie, Despicable Me. They are freaking adorbs, and he will not be the last one of these I make! I love them!

The last of this group is a cute little baby chicken.

I hope you enjoyed the first of this series! What do you think? Also, what Amis would you like to see me make?

Hoppy Easter Crafts

AKA – #56-59

This has been a very productive week for me. I have made 4 more crafts for my 100 craft challenge. I am particularly excited about this week’s crafts because it includes one of my monthly garlands, as well as two amis (and a hem for DH’s jeans)!

#56 – April’s Garland:

Last year, I began making a Garland for each month of the year, so I would have them to decorate my house. I did most of the months, but was unable to finish April. I used some leftover canvas I had, as well as a really pretty bicycle fabric with flowers in the baskets. I cut out each of the bikes, and appliqued them to the canvas. I sewed a little pink paisley roof onto the top of each one of them.  Then I strung them up on some yarn. I think they turned out really sweet. Very spring-like and cheery 🙂

I never started a few of the other months: August, September, October or November, so they may also make it into this challenge, lol. I know what my plan is for October and November, but still don’t know what I will do for August or September.

#57 – White Nijago

I finally finished the set of Ninjago characters for my friend’s son. She and he were both so happy to receive them. He had to clean his room everyday for 30 days to earn this one. He did it, and then he got his reward! I forgot to take pics, so she took them for me, and sent me him, as well as a picture of all three together!

#58 – Pants Hem

My husband bought some jeans a while back, and, while they were labelled his correct size, they were always too long. I wanted to take them up, but he was hesitant because he thought they would look unnatural, and not have the regular fold that jeans characteristically have. I folded them under and hemmed them up using the original hem. I think they turned out looking really good. They are the correct length and I even experimented with using a zig zag stitch on the cut material to keep it from fraying.

If you look really closely, you can see the hem, but when he is wearing them, you cannot see the stitch.

#59 – Easter Bunny:

This little cutie is finished just in time for Easter today. I think I am going to call him Hops. He is really cute. My favorite part is the tail. I made a super poofy pom pom. I love him, and hope you do too!

Summer Drawing to a Close

Summer is now nearly over. As the new school year approaches, I have a lot of mixed emotions. I am sad that my free crafting time is over. I am happy to get back into a routine and to see all my my students again! I am excited to meet the new ones. I am anxious because I am changing to a new elementary school (My home school, the junior high will not change. I am moving to a different one of our feeder elementary schools), and change is always difficult. Other feelings get mixed up in there, but those are the most prominent.

Reflecting back on this summer, I realize that, although I did not meet all of my crafting/crocheting/sewing goals, I had a great summer. I worked at two excited music camps, where I not only taught amazing students, but was also surrounded by master teachers, and learned so much! I went to the Texas Orchestra Directors Association conference and was inspired for my teaching and conducting this year. I got to spend so much quality time with my DH this summer, it was almost as though he was also on summer break!

Finally, I spent quite a bit of time crafting. My friends and I started a craft club. The first month, we made duck tape flower pens. We did not think to take pictures, and mine is packed in my school boxes, which I just dropped off at my new school. I plan to make a few more in my new school’s colors (red and blue!!). The next month, we made felt party hats, inspired by this wonderful tutorial by Princess Lasertron.

Our next craft will have a shell craft theme, which is perfect for our end of summer meeting! I can’t wait. Good times, good friends, and fun crafts 🙂

I have also been busy crocheting, although, I still have a lot to make before the craft shows in October/November. Here are some of the fun things I have been making!

Frank the Raccoon is Ready to Play

I would like to introduce Frank, the Raccoon!

Frank!

Frank!

Frank is a guy that is always goofing around. His motto is “Always have fun and be funny.” His good-natured humor and good-times guy attitude make him the ideal class clown. He is always playing silly pranks on the other Forest Friends. One time, he took Maynard’s skateboard and painted it to look like a patch of flowers where he hid it for a whole week! When Maynard finally found it, he liked the new artwork on it so much, he kept it like that. Frank can be silly most of the time, but he is also very sweet and shows his friendship and love for his friends by making them laugh. When they all get together, they always save him his favorite food – cherry clafoutis-YUM!

Frank and Maynard have very similar bodies and heads, although their ears and snouts are different. Frank’s eyes are silver pearl with black pupils that really pop against his mask, and his bushy tail is striped all the way down. I think he turned out super cute and I love him! He is in my etsy shop, but will definitely be difficult to part with 🙂

Meet Maynard

Meet Maynard the Fox! Maynard is a sweet fox, and member of the Forest Friends series.

Maynard the Fox

Maynard the Fox

Maynard likes to skateboard around the forest, and can be seen jamming to his music on his iPod. He likes to chase girls, and can sometimes be stubborn with authority, but it is all a ruse. Once you get to know him, Maynard is sweet and kind, and will be a loyal friend to you for life, especially if you give him his favorite food, beets, to snack on while you chat.

Maynard is a new pattern I am working on, and I got some new eyes form etsy6060, which I absolutely adore! They really give these guys a new personality. He has green eyes and a bushy tail. I hope you enjoy Maynard. He is available for purchase from my etsy shop, and he has some other Forest Friends coming soon!

Meet Alyssa

Alyssa!

Alyssa!

Alyssa is a young elephant. She is only 7 years old.

Even though she is younger, she really wants to keep up with the older Ami Adventurers. She runs after them and tries to play sports as well as they do, but she always falls a little short. Fortunately, she has a fighting spirit and never gets discouraged. It helps that she always carries a spoon close by, so even if she can’t keep up with her friends, she can slow down for a nice cup of her favorite food, peanut butter soup! Then she has tons of energy to go chasing the older ones again!

Brian’s adventures

Brian is this tall giraffe. He is actually the first of the four I made, but I did not realize that I never posted about him.

Brian the giraffe

Brian the giraffe

Brian is handsome and helpful, although sometimes a bit mischievous. All the girls like him, and all the boys want to be his buddy. Luckily, he is very outgoing! He organizes lots of sports games, and is always available if someone kicks the soccer ball too high and it gets stuck in the tree. When the gang goes on an adventure, Brian is always the look out, although he doesn’t always report everything, and this can cause a sticky situation – like the time he didn’t warn the guys about the bee hive up ahead. What a funny-honey time that was. At bed time, Brian always requests his favorite snack – lemon merigue pie – before hitting the hay.

I have made this giraffe several times, but I never write down the pattern, so he comes out slightly different each time. I think the next one I make (and there will be more!) I will write and share the pattern.
